WORLDWIDE HOLDINGS SELANGOR MASTERS MOVES TO NEW HOME AT KOTA PERMAI
Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, June 7: The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters will move to a new venue at the scenic Kota Permai Golf and Country Club when the popular Asian Tour tournament returns for its fifth edition next month.
This year’s Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters will once again offer a total prize fund of RM1.2 million (approximately US$400,000) from July 20 to 23 and will attract an elite field of Asian Tour stars including title holder Angelo Que of the Philippines, former champion Ben Leong of Malaysia and leading countrymen Danny Chia, Iain Steel and S. Siva Chandhran.
The tournament, which is the flagship professional golf event of the state of Selangor, also received a shot in the arm when it was announced today that it will continue to feature prominently on the Asian Tour’s Schedule following a two-year contract extension.
The state government also signed a two-year agreement with Kota Permai, a Ross Watson-designed course and dubbed as one of Malaysia’s finest, to host the event. The Club has previously hosted the Maybank Malaysian Open and Volvo Masters of Asia on the Asian Tour.
Selangor State Secretary Dato’ Haji Mohammed Khusrin Bin Haji Munawi expressed the Selangor state government’s support for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
“The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters has been a huge success since its launch as a domestic tournament in 2007. After elevating its status when we joined the Asian Tour Schedule in 2008, the tournament has grown immensely and played a big role in promoting the state of Selangor and Malaysia to the world through the Asian Tour’s global television platform which reaches over 130 countries and over 800 million homes,” said Dato’ Khusrin.
“While it is an honour to hold such a prestigious golf tournament in Selangor, it is also our aim to use the tournament as the impetus to promote sports and professional golf in our state and country,” he added.
For the fourth successive year, Worldwide Holdings will title sponsor the Selangor Masters. The state-linked company has a impressive portfolio of businesses which include property development and investment, environmental management services and investment holding in Selangor. Worldwide Holdings also recently expanded its businesses into Australia.
Worldwide Holding’s support of the Selangor Masters is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) where apart from sports sponsorship, it also supports the underprivileged through various community projects.
“On behalf of Worldwide Holdings, we are delighted to extend our association with the Asian Tour through the successful staging of the Selangor Masters. Since its inauguration, we have been extremely pleased with the benefits that the tournament has provided to Worldwide Holdings,” said Worldwide Holdings ChairmanYB Dato’ Mohd Arif Ab. Rahman.
“We fully support the growth of professional golf in Malaysia and across Asia and hope that the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters will celebrate another Malaysian golf champion as we did so in 2008 with Ben Leong’s famous victory over Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand.
“We are delighted to ink a new two-year extension for the tournament with the Asian Tour where our aim will be to showcase Selangor and Malaysia to the world. There is an abundance of world-class golf courses in Selangor and we are looking forward to a new chapter of our tournament when we move to Kota Permai next month,” he added.
Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han lauded the strong support from the Selangor Government and Worldwide Holdings. “The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters has become one of the favourite destinations for our highly talented players and the cast of champions clearly show that.
“Ultimately, the staging of this event will impact the local scene greatly as Malaysian players will have the opportunity to compete against the best players from the Asian Tour. Ben’s victory in 2008 was a wonderful example of how hosting a tournament here can accelerate the career of a Malaysian player. I must extend our fullest appreciation to the Selangor statement government and Worldwide Holdings for their outstanding support towards the game,” said Han.
After playing host to several of the Asian Tour’s marquee events in Malaysia, Kota Permai General Manager Tang Meng Loon said the Club was looking forward to hosting the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters for the first time. Seri Selangor Golf Club was the previous venue in the past four years.
“It is a great pleasure and honour for Kota Permai to be selected as the host venue for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters. Our preparation for the tournament is in full progress and we expect our championship course to provide a strong challenge to Asia’s best players,” said Tang.
Sanctioned by the Asian Tour, the official regional sanctioning body for professional golf in Asia and the only recognised pan-Asian professional golf tour in Asia, the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters will be the ninth leg of the 2011 Schedule.
